Mapfre Says Spanish Car Insurance Sales to Recover Next Year

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Mapfre SA , Spain’s biggest insurer, may see recovery in its car insurance division in the first half of next year as the “crisis” in auto sales subsides, General Manager Esteban Tejera said.
“It’s very difficult to forecast this kind of thing, but the tendency is changing in motor insurance,” Tejera said yesterday in an interview in Madrid. Recovery in Spain’s property insurance market will take longer, and international sales remain the engine of growth for Mapfre, he said.
Spain’s worst recession in 60 years has driven unemployment to 18.5 percent, the highest in Europe, sapping consumer demand for big ticket items such as cars. Premiums for auto insurance, the biggest business in Mapfre’s Spanish non-life division, which accounts for almost 60 percent of profit , fell 9.8 percent from a year earlier in the first half.
New car registrations stabilized at 58,510 in August, little changed from a year earlier, after dropping by more than a third this year, the Spanish automakers association said this month. Government efforts to stimulate car purchases are working, improving the outlook for auto insurance, Tejera said.
